Rebirth Brass Band
New Orleans second-line tradition run through funk and hip-hop, and the yardstick every other brass band gets measured against.
Rebirth Brass Band formed in 1983, started by high school students in New Orleans including the brothers Philip and Keith Frazier and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, who left the group in the 1990s. Philip Frazier's tuba still anchors the band, with the bass drum and snare pushing the horns rather than following them.
The group built its reputation playing street parades and clubs, and its Tuesday night stand at the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street has run for decades. "Do Whatcha Wanna" and "Casanova" became standards for other bands to pick up, and Rebirth's habit of folding funk grooves and rap hooks into parade repertoire changed what younger New Orleans brass bands played. The album "Rebirth of New Orleans" won a Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album in 2012.
