Sing-song murmurs over woozy, half-dissolved beats — druggy Chicago rap that turned a diaristic monotone into an entire aesthetic lineage.

LUCKI is a rapper from Chicago who began releasing music as a teenager, appearing around 2013 under the name Lucki Eck$ with the mixtape Alternative Trap. He wrote and released it at seventeen, having left Proviso East High School at sixteen to rap full time, and the local outlet Elevator was among the first to feature his videos. He described the record's sparse, subdued sound as "alternative trap."

That early material arrived alongside a wave of Chicago artists working outside the city's drill sound, and its combination of hazy production and flat, conversational delivery proved widely influential on later underground rap. Early collaborators included Danny Brown, FKA twigs and fellow Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper, who appeared on "Stevie Wonder" in 2014.

He has continued to release music largely through mixtapes and short projects, including Body High, X, the Freewave series and Watch My Back. His songs tend to be built on slow, blurred loops with the vocals sitting low in the mix, and the writing is candid about drug use, paranoia and relationships.

Freewave 3, released in 2019, drew wide critical attention for its stripped-down sound, and Days B4 III later that year became his first project to chart on the Billboard 200. He then signed a distribution deal with Empire, releasing the EP Almost There and the collaborative album Wake Up Lucki with producer F1lthy.

His albums Flawless Like Me and S*x M*ney Dr*gs both reached the upper half of the Billboard 200, and Gemini! followed in 2024. LUCKI has also collaborated frequently with producers and peers from the same underground circles, and his phrasing is often cited by younger rappers working in a similar register.
