Joelma
The voice of Banda Calypso, whose Amazonian brega-pop sold millions of records before she took it solo.
Joelma was born in Almeirim, Pará, and formed Banda Calypso in 1999 with the guitarist Chimbinha. The duo built an audience across the North and Northeast largely outside the major labels, selling through street vendors and touring relentlessly, and their version of calypso mixed brega ballads with Caribbean rhythms and lead guitar. "Dançando Calypso" is among the songs most associated with them.
She left the group in 2016 and has recorded under her own name since, keeping the calypso repertoire in her sets alongside newer material. Her shows retain the spinning, high-energy dance routines she performed with the band.
