The huskiest voice in Mamamoo out on her own, trading group polish for blunt, unbothered solo pop and a stage presence that dares the room to flinch.

Hwasa is the stage name of Ahn Hye-jin, born in 1995 in Jeonju, South Korea, taken from a word meaning "to shine brightly." She is best known as a member of the girl group Mamamoo, which debuted in 2014 with the single "Mr. Ambiguous," on which she was one of the leading voices.

Within the group she is recognised for her low, husky tone, and even before debut she had been featured as a teenager on tracks by artists including Solbi and the band Standing Egg. She began writing and releasing solo material alongside Mamamoo's output, including "Be Calm" in 2018 and a collaboration with rapper Loco, "Don't," which went platinum in South Korea.

Her solo debut single, "Twit," released in 2019, topped South Korea's Circle Digital Chart and won a Gaon Chart Music Award. She followed it with the EP María in 2020, whose title track reached number two on the Gaon Chart and earned her a Golden Disc Award, and joined the group Refund Sisters for the number-one single "Don't Touch Me" the same year.

In 2023 she left her longtime label RBW for P Nation, releasing "I Love My Body," which reached the top ten of both the Circle Digital Chart and Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart. Her 2025 single "Good Goodbye" became her biggest commercial success, reaching number 32 on the Billboard Global 200, spending nine weeks at number one on the Circle Digital Chart, and topping the World Digital Song Sales chart.

Her solo work leans toward pop and R&B with a more direct, less polished presentation than typical K-pop fare, and she has also appeared frequently on South Korean variety television, where her candid manner has drawn attention independently of her music.
