DIIV

DIIV began in Brooklyn in 2011 as a home-recording project by Zachary Cole Smith, who had played guitar in Beach Fossils. It started out under the name Dive, after a Nirvana song, before taking its current spelling. The debut album, 'Oshin' (2012), came out on Captured Tracks. Its interlocking, reverb-soaked guitar lines rode over steady, motorik drumming that owed as much to krautrock as to shoegaze.

The double album 'Is the Is Are' (2016) widened that sound. 'Deceiver' (2019) brought in heavier, more distorted guitars and a slower pull. The band's lineup settled around Smith with guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Colin Caulfield and drummer Ben Newman, and the later records lean on that four-piece interplay more than on Smith alone.
