Alisha
Voice behind a run of mid-eighties freestyle and dance-pop singles, still touring the sound that came out of New York clubs.
Alisha was born Alisha Ann Itkin in Brooklyn, New York, and started vocal lessons at age eight after her parents pushed her toward a music career. At fourteen she joined a Brooklyn rock and dance group called The Babysitters, and a demo tape from that band eventually reached producer Mark S. Berry at Vanguard Records.
Her first single, "All Night Passion", appeared in February 1984 and became a club hit, reaching number four on the dance charts. Berry went on to produce her 1985 self-titled debut album, which added "Too Turned On" and "Baby Talk", a number-one dance hit that December and the song most identified with her freestyle sound.
In 1987 she signed to RCA for the album Nightwalkin', which produced the singles "Into My Secret" and "Let Your Heart Make Up Your Mind" and included "Do You Dream About Me", written by Diane Warren for the film Mannequin. The album did not chart, and it remained her only release for RCA.
A 1990 deal with MCA brought Bounce Back, produced by Michael Jay, whose title track reached the dance top ten and cracked the Billboard Hot 100. Later singles, including "Wherever the Rhythm Takes Me" in 1996 and "You Wanna Be a Star", made for the film Superstar in 1999, kept her name in club circulation.
