Agnostic Front
The godfathers of NYHC — Lower East Side scripture since the early '80s, with 'Victim in Pain' still the blueprint for every two-stepping hardcore band that followed.
The band's original lineup, assembled around guitarist Vinnie Stigma, went through several vocalists before Roger Miret joined in 1983, cementing the pairing that would define the group. In its early years the band was made up entirely of skinheads, a lineage it kept even as the lineup diversified, and it recorded its debut EP, United Blood, that same year.
Victim in Pain, released in 1984, was later described by one critic as the definitive document of the New York hardcore scene. The band toured the U.S. behind it in support of acts like the UK Subs and the Exploited, though Miret's lack of a passport at the time kept them from touring internationally.
Agnostic Front's skinhead affiliation drew accusations of racism from some quarters in the mid-1980s, including a national television segment. Miret pushed back publicly at the time, arguing that American skinhead culture was distinct from the fascist associations of the British scene and did not reflect the band's own politics.
The band is credited as a pioneer of crossover thrash alongside its foundational role in New York hardcore, a dual identity that shaped its later, heavier records and kept it touring and recording steadily across the following decades.
