Spider One's long-running industrial metal outfit, built on sci-fi B-movie imagery and pneumatic riffs — 'When Worlds Collide' still detonating three decades on.

Powerman 5000 formed in Boston in 1991 around vocalist Spider One, born Michael Cummings and the younger brother of Rob Zombie. Before forming the band he built a local following as a solo artist, winning the Boston Phoenix and WFNX poll for best rap act in 1990, then assembled a full lineup with drummer Al Pahanish Jr., bassist Dorian Heartsong and guitarist Adam 12.

The band's sound combines industrial metal with hard rock and hip-hop-inflected rhythms, wrapped in a visual identity drawn from science fiction serials and low-budget monster films. Independent releases built a following through the mid-1990s, and by 1996 the band had signed to DreamWorks Records, played Ozzfest's main stage, and appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

Their breakthrough came with 1999's Tonight the Stars Revolt!, produced by Sylvia Massy, which reached number 29 on the Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies behind the singles 'When Worlds Collide' and 'Nobody's Real'. The album's success brought tours alongside Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock and System of a Down.

A planned follow-up, Anyone for Doomsday?, was recorded in 2001 but pulled before release amid legal disputes, eventually surfacing years later through Spider One's own label. Powerman 5000 has released eleven studio albums in total, continuing through numerous line-up changes with Spider One as the only constant member, releasing albums and touring steadily since.
