Flemish trio in operation since 1998, an institution of Dutch-language children's pop — a rotating line-up under a brand that has outlived several generations of its own audience.

K3 was launched in 1997 by producer Niels William as a Flemish answer to the Spice Girls, originally called Mascara and fronted by Karen Damen, Kristel Verbeke and Kelly Cobbaut. When Cobbaut left for college and her intended replacement withdrew rather than sing in Dutch, Kathleen Aerts joined instead, and the group renamed itself K3, after the shared initial of its three singers, in November 1998.

The first single, "Wat ik wil", made little impression, but an entry in the 1999 competition to choose Belgium's Eurovision entry, "Heyah Mama", became the group's breakthrough, reaching number two in Flanders despite dismissive comments from a contest judge. K3 built its early audience without support from music television.

The group's visual identity rests on three singers wearing matching outfits, traditionally styled as a redhead, a brunette and a blonde. That formula, paired with simple, bubblegum-pop choruses sung in Dutch and choreographed routines, has stayed constant through every line-up change since 1998.

Sold to the production company Studio 100 in 2002, K3 expanded into nine studio albums, television series, films and stage musicals, becoming one of the most recognised children's entertainment properties in Belgium and the Netherlands. Its television show De wereld van K3 became one of the group's longest-running spinoffs.

The line-up has changed more than once, with new members chosen through televised audition contests. Josje Huisman replaced Kathleen Aerts in 2009, Hanne Verbruggen, Klaasje Meijer and Marthe De Pillecyn took over in 2015, and Julia Boschman, picked from more than 22,000 entrants, joined in 2021 alongside Verbruggen and De Pillecyn.
